OPEN Education: Own the Potential of Environment in Non-formal Education

Erasmus+ KA1 Training Course
4-11 April 2017 - Limassol, Cyprus

By Revekka Kefalea and George Skitsos

In April 2017, we had the opportunity to participate in the Erasmus+ KA1 “OPEN Education” training course, which took place in Limassol, Cyprus.

During the first three days of the training course, we engaged ourselves in various verbal and non-verbal communication activities in order to get to know the other participants from all around Europe, we presented our learning goals, we defined the concepts of training, teaching, coaching and facilitating and we identified ourselves as trainers. Also, we participated in various storytelling activities, in the context of which we explored the visual, auditory and kinaesthetic elements of communication, and we experimented with the four basic communication styles (controller, promoter, supporter, analyser).

During the following days until the end of the training course, we had the opportunity to collaborate with the other participants and practice traineeship. We created, presented and delivered activities focused on the learning needs of the trainees - and we improved both the activities that we created and ourselves as trainers, after giving and receiving feedback.

Most of the activities in which we participated focused on the personal development of youth workers and trainers - which was not what we expected out of this training course. However, by collaborating and practicing traineeship with our peers, we engaged ourselves in fruitful discussions and we explored and experimented with training methods and tools that other participants already use in their working environments both in formal and non-formal education.

Apart from taking part in sessions, we celebrated the cultural diversity of Europe (in the context of the Intercultural Dinner) and we visited Oleastro Olive Park and Omodos village, where we tasted local food and wine (in the context of the cultural excursion).
